We identify groundbreaking tech inventions across DTU, screen for impact potential, assemble ideal teams, and provide catalytic resources to see them to the market.

How we operate

DTU Earthbound operates on a grant given by the early stage venture house, PreSeed Ventures (DTU Subsidiary), for acceleration of science-based innovation. Embedded into DTU and it's science ecosystem, DTU Earthbound has unprecedented access to deep tech science at the time of invention.

Our grants and resources are non-profit. We work to gear our cases for the first round of funding, and prefer to see them land the money before we let them go. We are a young organization with ambitions to grow our offerings and value for the climate tech inventions we engage with.

What we do

1 Mobilize scientists, students and entrepreneurs for the planet

Embedded into DTU, we work to inspire scientists and students to take action by raising awareness of the technical inventions and applications necessary for achieving a sustainable transition in our societies. This work is done through challenges, events and campaigns around campus.

Interested scientists and students can apply for our venture building programs Nurture (scientists) and Climate Ignite (students).

2 Nurture technical science for the startup journey

Selected research projects enter into a 3-9 months program, where they receive support for:

  • Company building and early commercialisation
  • implementation of impact tools to track progress
  • grant writing experts
  • design thinking workshops, research travels, and other catalytic resources depending on the technology case.

DTU Earthbound and the science team design a tailormade process together upon program start.

3 Mature spinouts with entrepreneurs in the loop

To mature cases ready for spinning out of DTU into a startup, Earthbound offers a Mature Program for an additional 3-9 months. Here, we work towards a  viable model for becoming financially sustainable after 9 months; maturing a venture plan and pitch, and finalizing a clear outline for the spinout’s impact potential.

As part of accelerating projects at this stage, DTU Earthbound offers the science teams the option of an experienced entrepreneur in residence  to lead the business side of the venture. Proven deep tech entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply for DTU Earthbound’s residency, but the final match  is a mutual choice between research team and entrepreneur.

Bound for impact

We believe that existing technologies and new inventions will play a crucial role in the urgent transition of our societies to meet climate transformation targets. We are guided by both IPCC’s work and the Planetary Boundaries framework. This science-based understanding of the challenges we are up against informs our selection of deep tech inventions. Our work to select and back inventions and measure their impact is dynamic and ongoing … and probably the thing we talk about the most. Under each case, you can read why we believe the particular case matters.

DTU Earthbound contributes  technology solutions to combat planetary crises. However, it is important for us to state that technologies alone won’t save us. The needed transition requires action from all parts of society. Therefore, we  are always up for discussing our work, our learnings and how to improve our offerings.
